Its simpler mounting system can translate into various benefits like lighter weight, less expensive to manufacture, and single point connection to the host. ![]() But a direct thread suppressor is simpler by design, that is for sure. This is likely due to improvements in technology and manufacturing process’. That may have been true in the past, but in my experience direct threading suppressors are no more accurate than brake mounted cans. But with the right understanding you will be more than capable of making a good choice.ĭirect thread suppressors are often considered to be better for accuracy, many people suggest them for precision rifles citing this as a better choice. So lets get to the meat and potatoes of the discussion which one is better for me? The internet is filled with hatred for the person who presents the old “which one is the best” question, only you can decide that. It varies from one manufacturer to another, but often the muzzle device can use course threads, ratcheting locks, and other features to reduce the effort and time required to install the suppressor. The various muzzle devices typically seen will usually serve as a recoil reducer when not used in conjunction with the suppressor, they also frequently function as a flash hider. The muzzle device threads onto the barrel, and the suppressor attaches to the exterior. Muzzle Brake or QD (as many are called) mounted suppressors attach to the muzzle device, instead of directly attached to the barrel. Direct thread suppressors are designed to fit squarely against the host barrel 338 sized rifles the common thread pattern is 3/4-24. 224 caliber centerfire rifles, 5/8-24 for rifles between 30 caliber down to 6mm, and for. ![]() The most common sizes are 1/2-28 for rimfire and. Thread pitches vary depending on many factors, but mainly on the caliber of the anticipated host. Direct thread suppressors are fairly self explanatory, they have threads on the mounting end of the suppressor that are designed to directly engage with the muzzle-threads of the host firearm. One of the big questions many new suppressor users ask, and one that often still perplexes those of us after decades is should I get a direct thread can, or a brake mounted one? Hopefully by the time your done reading this, you’ll have a suitable answer.įirst lets make sure we understand the differences. Some trends are just trends, but the suppressor craze is one I can get behind fully. The SiCo Omega to YHM mount offers the choice of YHM flash hiders or brakes, and the YHM QD mounting system is the best available, bar none, but you won't save weight. We keep hitting on suppressors here on the Desert Tech blog, partially because we are suckers for suppressors, and also because everybody else is also joining the trend. The Diversified Machine titanium Omega to Griffon Minimalist brake or flash hider mount reduces weight and does not add length. ![]() But, if you want to switch do not go KeyMo, which adds weight and length, and the Q option isn't much lighter and looks even longer. Use a brake on the 11.5" 5.56 since once you shoot it suppressed you will never again shoot it unsuppressed and the brake will act as a sacrificial blast baffle to extend the life of the Omega's blast baffle.ĮTA: The ARS system works great so long as you don't do anything stupid, like hot swap the can or forget to turn the locking latch. ![]() If I was in your shoes, I would use a flash hider on the 18" and 16" barrels since these will be tolerable to shoot unsuppressed. View QuoteI have two Omegas and a bunch of brakes and flash hiders. ![]() Here’s the exact description from Intel’s site: This is a real godsend for people like me! I used to spend days tweaking my BIOS settings and running torture tests to make sure my CPU was running flawlessly and at maximum capacity. It’s something that just happens and keeps your PC running at maximum speed, without you having to do any overclocking of your own. In perfect conditions, Turbo Boost is never something you have to even think about. ![]() Note that some higher-end computers are built to sustain the Turbo Boost and have higher performing cooling systems to compensate. Your laptop’s battery will also last longer! Disabling it will make your PC run cooler and quieter. SPOILER ALERT: If you have a modern laptop that causes third-degree burns if you actually dare to rest it on your lap, it probably has a cooling system that isn’t sufficient, and Turbo Boost IS NOT helping the matter. Automatic boosts are nice, but perhaps having a button you can control isn’t such a bad idea … If you’ve got a modern computer and you’re running Windows, the odds are that you can pull up the performance tab of Task Manager and see that your processor’s frequency is changing dynamically-sometimes jumping far above the base clock speed. Intel’s Turbo Boost technology (or AMD’s Turbo Core) works on the same principle, but it’s all automatic. I’ve never actually touched a computer with a physical turbo button, but once upon a time it was common for computers to have a physical switch that would allow a processor to run at a higher speed, at the cost of increased heat and power usage. ![]() Suffice to say I wasn't into inks, apart from the black to thin down the black for black lining (does anyone black line anymore?). I didn't much like the inks, so tended to mix the paints and make my own washes (the Terracota colour in the Space Marine set was perfect for skin) and I've pretty much been doing that since, changing it slightly to using a leaching and technique over the past 8 years to get an aged look etc. The paints were very different and quality sporadic (the Shining Gold was still the best gold GW ever produced mind you!) with some pretty simple shades. My first GW paints were the Citadel Colour Space Marine Paint set from 1989, then I went on to get all the sets including the fledgling Inks set back in the day. I should give a little bit of background on how I paint, as Beardy Hammer would suggest, it goes way back to the 80's, so in that time there have been a lot of GW paint products come and go, in fact I still use many of my old paints. You may say "You idiot - I've been using that for ages." and you know what, you'd be right! This is principally Fulgrim's face, which isn't quite what I had in mind - it might need a coat of Elf Flesh over the high points it to bring it back up. Next step is going to be to highlight, and to try and sort out those areas which have gone a bit too dark. Soft Tone is used on some lighter items like the hair, flesh and bones. The bulk of the figure not already washed gets the Dark Tone, especially the brown and the metal. I use the dropper bottles rather than dipping, because I want to avoid getting any on the pink. ![]() The rest of the figure is painted in Army Painter Quickshade. Purple shades alright with just black, but shading pink was really tricky without making it go brown - the purple, however, keeps the base colour nicely.Īs you can see, the skulls have indeed gone a more boney colour once the Quickshade goes on. but the skin is way darker than I want.Īll purple and pink on the figure was washed with Druchii Violet, which was a real gem in the new GW paint range for me. Since then I've started picking up store-bought washes again and while it still tends to dirty up the figures I use them on, I can get some good looks. I found with these improvised washes I had more control over colour. When I restarted I experimented with very thinned paint to make my own washes, and has some success - I'd go about adding water to the palette until the point where, when painting on my palette, the paint didn't stick flat but started quickly contracting inwards. When I was younger I found inks totally useless - I always got as far as a crisp base coat and I could get drybrushing to work, but when I put any ink or wash on the whole thing would just turn into a much. I also realised I'd missed skulls on his own base, so I painted them as the display base ones - off-white. Metallic just seemed overkill when he was already fairly attention-grabbing. You'll see I stuck with flat purple in the end. This is the first time I've ever pinned a figure. A little leg of staple and a dod of Milliput was added into the hole and hopefully it'll be a bit more secure. I reattached the sword & pommel which are now pinned - I fit the smallest bit I could to my pin vice and drilled a hole into the hand and both accessories. Then, the same thing happened to Fulgrim himself. ![]() ![]() Although Type 1 remained the standard in the graphics/publishing market, TrueType became the standard for business and the average Windows user.
